WHAT IS INLINE HOCKEY?

Inline hockey is described by some as ice hockey on inline skates. It looks much the same and the rules are similar. The only major differences are that we play on tiles, concrete or wood instead of ice, inline is played with 4 players and a goalie on the rink at a time instead of 5 players and a goalie, and body checking is not allowed.

In-line hockey was originally designed as an alternative for ice hockey players in the summer months.

Inline skating (rollerblading) is one of the fastest growing leisure activities in the world. Inline hockey meets the needs of young people who want the thrill and excitement of a competitive sport.

WHAT GEAR WILL I NEED?

Inline hockey is an extremely fast sport and the safety of each player is a concern to the club. Coaches and managers insist on protective gear being worn on the rink for training and games. The rules are designed for player safety and are strictly enforced by the referees.

Apart from a stick, skates and matching uniform all members of the team are required to wear the following safety gear when playing:

  • An approved hockey helmet, with the chin strap properly fastened. Those 18 and under must have a full face cage or visor. Players aged 19 and 20 must have a half visor or half cage. For Seniors a cage or visor is optional.
  • Gloves designed for hockey
  • Knee and shin protection
  • Elbow guards
  • Padded hockey pants, protective cup or pelvic protector

All players are able to borrow protective equipment from the club for an introductory period of 1 season, their second playing season members are required to purchase their own gear.

Second hand gear can be purchased on Trade Me and on Club Open Day.
New gear can be purchased from Ice and Inline, Hockey Locker and SK8.

Matt Chan, a member of our club is an agent for Ice and Inline.
If in doubt about what gear to buy please ask your coach or manager.
